Learning is multi-layered

So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12

When your kids rush out of the room first thing in the morning after waking up, each picking out their own books, happily co-seated despite different ages, chatting and working through each page; you know Its time to step up the gas on the learning journey!

It was such a teachable moment for me as a mother, particularly as a homeschooling mother, to be gently reminded by my children and to have the reaffirmation that learning happens in a multi age setting.

That is probably the best of learnings that a child can experience, in my personal opinion – after all that is how the real world works doesn’t it?

In my corporate world, I had to interact with people from different backgrounds and of different ages – from a fresh-out-of-uni graduate colleague to a 2-months-until-retirement colleague with 35 years of experience. We tend to impart teaching in silo groups of peers, divided according to the age. The end result is however far from ideal!

Each group’s cumulative knowledge is both limited and shaped by their still developing personalities and brains, because they aren’t being challenged by ideas of a group or a person of different age(s). The products of modern system of education – the young minds – are crippled in a sense that their knowledge is not as diverse, due to no or poor exposure unto different perspectives or interpretations. And when these young minds leave their cocoon of containment into the real world, they get overwhelmed by the various vantage points they’re forced to encounter and having to consider.

This is one of the main reasons that the Connect Groups of Teachable Hearts are intentionally and deliberately multi age, multi level and certainly multi cultural, because –

Learning in its core essence is truly multi-layered.

May God grant us all teachable hearts! Lord, have mercy on us Lord, have mercy on us 🙏
