hear! hear!

So… it was a fine, chilly Sunday morning and I am rushing to get to church because I’m running late again! Punctuality isn’t my strongest forte but I have always been strategically able to take measures to tackle it upfront. But lately I am noticing slip ups happening… anyway its a post, a tale, a reflection for another time.

I was prayerfully singing praises while I was packing up MWP Online Store’s first bulk order to handdeliver that morning, and I had totally lost track of time. I had to be at church at a particular time being part of the serving team – something my husband and I both truly believe in – how could we not? I had to halt everything, put on a quick jumper that I could find, grab my headscarf and car keys, “ahoy bye!” to my besties and scoot to the car.

I was filled with guilt and my mind was just racing through too many thoughts at once… and in a bid for calm I relied on the background music playing on the radio. The song was upbeat with a catchy tune, and it drew my attention in no time. I increase the volume to listen intently and just as I was starting to enjoy, I heard the lyrics of the song say…

“I’m in love with your body
Every day discovering something brand new
I’m in love with the shape of you…”

I felt so disquieted within and immediately turned it off. Unknowingly I got lured into the song with a catchy tune… I anguished in prayer for all those who do and don’t turn it off and continue on to enjoy such songs… feeding on the idea of lust but hearing of love instead. I shudder at the impact the words … “I’m in love with your body… with the shape of you…” can have on the tender minds of children and youth!

Why turn it off? Why anguish for those listen to such? Because what we listen and let ourselves hear, is what influences our lives and shapes our world view. The need of the hour is Discernment!

My mind screamed the prayer “Lord, have mercy!”, as I turned into the parking lot. I rush inside, greet people, silently praying for each as they walk in, then came the sermon time… and the pastor introduces the new series we were going to be doing – HEAR. And my spirit chuckled at the kind of prelude God gave me to prepare my heart whilst on the way driving. It can’t get any more timely.

Hear! Hear!

What are you tapping into lately? What influences are you letting on? Would you pay more attention to what you hear?

  1. Right on influences even the books we read. By the way, we listen 89.9 the light, Christian radio station only, problem fixed. Kids and family friendly, upbeat. Applaud you for turning off bad music, some finish the song first. Its about awareness first to hear properly?
